December 7th – Pearl Harbor Day Tribute

The Pearl Harbor Day Tribute was held in the post on Wednesday, December 7th.  Past Commander Dick Grube reviewed the “Day of Infamy” at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese Navy launched a sneak attack and put the United States into World War Two. The casualty figures for the number of each branch of the service killed in the raid were read by Dick Grube and a bell was tolled by Junior Vice Commander Randy Clark.

County Executive Maggie Brooks read a Proclamation to proclaim December 7th 2011 “Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day”.  Also Rich Turner, Chief of Staff for NY State Assemblyman Mark Johns presented a citation to Rosa Morrow for her husbands' Medal.

The Honor Guard, directed by Honor Guard President Pat Cammilleri presented a rifle salute and Taps for those lost at Pearl Harbor to end the Tribute.

Preceding the Tribute, a Bronze Medal was presented to the widow of a past Life Member of the post, James Morrow.  The medal was for bravery when PFC Morrow fought the Japanese in Okinawa in 1942. Major General John Batiste (Ret) reviewed the commendation with the medal and presented the medal to Rosa Morrow.  Many of the family were present and a display of Mr. Morrow’s military equipment including a canteen cup with the battles and ships he was on etched on the cup.  Also was pictures and his uniform and a multitude of other medals that he was awarded.

Honor Flight receives $10,000 Check from Our VFW Post 8495

Presemtiong the check

Honor Flight Welcome Home Mission 19, October 8-9, 2011. Fairport VFW Post 8495 presenting check from golf tournament to HFR
I just wanted to pass along my personal thanks to the Fairport VFW for the beyond generous gift last Sunday at the Welcome Home ceremony. Thought maybe your post would like to see this photo - it's imbedded below and also attached separately, in case you want to print it.
Thanks again,
Linda Frey Honor Flight Rochester Welcome Home Coordinator

From the October 10th Democrat and Chronicle -
"Honor Flight Rochester started in 2008 and is part of a national network that provides free trips to the service memorials in the nation's capital to WWII veterans and to those of any era with a terminal illness. Honor Flight Rochester schedules six overnight trips each year — three in the spring and three in the fall.

Each trip costs about $30,000, which is generated through donations and fundraising. Honor Flight Rochester received a huge boost during a ceremony in the International Arrivals Hall when president Vince Hope was presented with three checks: $10,000 from the annual golf tournament of the Perinton Memorial VFW Post 8495; $9,096 from the 2011 ESL International Air Show (County Executive Maggie Brooks kicked in four bucks to round up the total); and $2,900 from the Holley Rotary Club.

"I think we paid for 48 more vets to go on a trip," Hope told the crowd after doing some quick arithmetic. "This is just unbelievable support."

Later on, at the post  -

E-mail from County Commander Rick Gough
Congratulations are in order for Jim Schenkel. Jim has received an appointment as National Deputy Chief of Staff. As County Commander I may submit names for this honor. I selected Jim for his outstanding efforts at the Post, County and District levels. Congratulations Jim on this well deserved honor.

Congratulations are in order for Jerry Gropp. Jerry has received an appointment as Aide to Camp for the Commander in Chief. I selected Jerry for this honor to recognize his untiring efforts at our post and for the wonderful work he has done through the years for our hospitalized veterans by spreading a little cheer each year at Christmas. Congratulations Jerry.

As I type this, I'm looking at a large trophy that reads "First Place  --  All Events  --  High Handicap" My guess is that this will soon grace the Trophy Case in the home of my golfing partner Don McLean.

Commander Grube, his staff of dedicated officers, and all post members should be very proud that our post has once again been recognized for our service to our community by receiving the National Community Service Recognition Award. Of all the awards passed out at this convention, to my mind this is the most important, It recognizes the efforts of all the members of our post and auxiliary. I am very proud to bring this home.

This will be my last e-mail as Monroe County Commander. This afternoon all new elected officers take over. While I have accepted an appointment as a member of the Department of New York Legislative Committee, I plan to take it easy  for a year and spend some time with my family. It has been a pleasure serving as Monroe County Commander, but it is time to move on.

Pat will report on the outstanding achievements of our Ladies Auxiliary. But let me just say to all the ladies -- Well Done. We have an auxiliary that now sets the standard for all the others to try to match. Keep up the good work.

See you around the post!

Post Commander Grube appointment as Veterans Affairs Voluntary Services for Canandaigua VA Medical
Facility  After 2 years of effort at all levels of this organization, it is official that our Commander Dick Grube
is now the Veterans of Foreign Wars VAVS Representative at the Canandaigua VA Hospital. His letter of
appointment was received on November 24 2010. This is good news for the patients at the hospital as
Dick will work to increase involvement by all posts in District 8 at the hospital. <>Further good news is that
Dick drove the first new van to the hospital
this past Monday for their approval. He was able to get a year
old van equipped with a lift.
The financials are going through the process now, and we will still have $8k left in the fund toward the
purchase of the second van.

I'm sure you all will join me in congratulating Dick on this much deserved appointment.

Monroe County Council
